In a 7 day period U High Cross Country won 2 regional championships and a sectional championship in the IHSA State Series!
The girls cross country team won the championship at the Jones College Prep IHSA Class AA Sectional held at Niles West High School on Saturday. Leading the way for U High and winning her 2nd straight Sectional Championship was Sherry Fu. Sherry led the whole way and put away her closest competitor just before the 2 mile mark. Sarah Curci was also in the ten finishing 9th followed by Julia Baird, Molly Rotmensch, Alex Chang, Katelyn Suchtya and Aoife MacMahon. The girls run again next Saturday at the State Meet in Peoria.
The boys team finished a very strong 6th place and were led by state meet qualifiers Robert Meyer and Ben Bucheim- Jurisson. Thomas Aquino ran a spectacular yet heartbreaking race after badly spraining his ankle during practice 3 days before the meet. It was the first time he had run since the injury and just missed qualifying for state by 1 place. Running great races were Sam Sentongo, Danny Traub, Shane Selig and Matt Soble. Ben and Robert will be running in Peoria along with the girls team on Saturday.
In regional competition both teams took titles. Sherry Fu was the individual champion for the 2nd year in a row while Robert Meyer took a close 2nd. The boys team defeated Jones by a meer 2 points due to great performances by Robert, Ben Bucheim-Jurisson, Thomas Aquino, Danny Traub, Sam Sentongo, Shane Selig and Matt Soble. The girls who supported Sherry Fu and her win were Sarah Curci, Molly Rotmensch, Julia Baird, Aoife MacMahon, Katelyn Suchtya and Alex Chang.
